THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S STUDY
A very exciting, extensive national study of the impact of the environment on children’s health has been in the planning stages for 9 years (2000-2008) and will finally launch with enrollment of participants beginning in 2009. The National Children’s Study will examine the effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the United States, following them from before birth until age 21. The goal of the study is to improve the health and well-being of children.
UTHSCT, home of SWCPEH, will play a major role in conducting the National Children’s Study in Lamar County, TX. Dr. Cherry and faculty from UTHSCT as well as pediatric specialists from UT Southwestern, public health specialists from the University of Texas School of Public Health, and Battelle Memorial Institute form the North Texas Children’s Study Coalition for Lamar County, where Paris, Texas is the County Seat. This is one of the study sites that represents rural and small town populations. The specific goals of the Lamar county program is to recruit 1000 live births over a 5 year period consistent with the goals and objectives of the National Children’s Study.
